The Terrapins lost their third game in the last four after a 78-67 beating at the hands of Rutgers. Terrapins Insider Jeff Ermann of 247sports.com joined The Doc and Galdi Show with a complete break-down of the loss.
Do you think that we all need to calm down or do you think it’s justified to be concerned that we’re seeing another one of these late season swoons?
Naw I think it’s justified especially seeing how drastically and dramatically the tide has turned in the past week and a half after how well they were playing. And like you said, it has happened before, the past several years, and obviously the Big Ten tournament where they’ve had several quick exits. If it wasn’t a recurring theme, I would say ‘Take a deep breath and relax’ but it is reason for concern.
Ermann on what the Terps need to improve on/fix…
They really need to fix the defense. It’s not like this poor shooting is new. They’ve had an incredible season considering how bad they shot the ball all year. But the defense the past four games, they’ve given up 76 points per game and they were averaging in the low 60s before that. You combine that with the offense struggling. And they’ve really relied on some dramatic comebacks all year. All year, the discussion was how sustainable is this, continually falling in these holes and relying on coming back so that’s another thing. And I think when you have a six man rotation, you know a lot of people disagree with this and say ‘They’re college kids and they can’t be tired’. I think fatigue is starting to kick in a little bit. Regardless, they need to figure out these couple of things that are ailing them because they only have one game left and then you got the postseason.
How do Maryland fans view Mark Turgeon?
He can do a lot for himself by getting to an Elite 8 or winning the Big Ten tournament title. You know they’ve been one and done in the Big Ten tournament the last few years. He typically puts up good records, he gets in the rankings, they make the Tournament, but I think people are becoming really impatient with not making that run, especially when you combine it with the down years that came in Gary’s final years before him. You put that altogether and it’s a program that’s been to the Sweet 16 one time since 2013. Maryland fans love basketball so that’s kind of a drought to deal with.
