Alex Ovechkin will get some extra rest instead of playing in the 2019 NHL All-Star game in San Jose. That decision will cause Ovechkin to serve an automatic one-game suspension.

The Associated Press stated that NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed Ovechkin must miss either the game before or after the All-Star break. The NHL recently instituted an automatic one-game suspension for players who chose not to participate in All-Star Weekend, except in cases of injury.

The Fans voted Ovechkin the captain of the Metropolitan Division All-Star team. Goaltender Braden Holtby and defenseman John Carlson will represent the Capitals at All-Star weekend.

The format for the All-Star event will follow that of last season’s event, with a four-team, 3-on-3 single-elimination tournament.

The NHL All-Star Game takes place Saturday, January 26, 2019.
